12 Things You Can’t Miss in Bali
It will come as no surprise that I view Bali as one of the most magical places on earth.
When I was debating where to host my first group trip – it was literally no contest – I knew it had to be BALI. While I love solo travel, I truly believe that some places are too special not to be shared.
Bali was one of those places for me.
It’s this little Hindu island in the midst of a largely Muslim country….so even it’s origin is a bit unusual, curious, and alluring. And mere discussion of Bali conjures up exotic images of lush jungles, beautiful beaches, and culture galore! I think it’s one of those MOST people have on their bucket lists and dream about.
And there is literally SOMETHING for everyone and every type of traveler - whether you’re looking for a tranquil, exotic experience or a boisterous fun one! And it’s cheap, has great weather, and strong wifi – which isn’t always easy to find.
Not to mention, the welcoming locals are a huge draw here as well. Being largely Hindu – they offer a fresh and unique perspective on life. And, at least for me, one of the best parts of travel is the people you meet and the opportunity to become immersed in another culture.
Obviously I’m a big fan of the island and could go on and on. But here are my top 10 things you can’t miss when visiting Bali…..
1. Enjoy the cultural epicenter of Ubud
Ubud is my favorite place in Bali. Not only is it the cultural epicenter, but it feels unlike anywhere else I’ve ever traveled to. Here you’ll find many Hindu temples, great restaurants (both trendy eateries and local cuisine), craftsman workshops, green hillsides and lush rice terraces.
While there is SO much to do in Ubud and you’ll have an easy time packing your days with activities – I encourage you to give yourself some time to just wander around. A few places that are great for exploring on foot are the Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Royal Palace and Ubud market. All of these are close together and you’ll pass many shops and restaurants to/from as well.
2. Get to know the locals
As mentioned in my introduction, the locals definitely add to the overall pleasant and welcoming feel of Bali. Every time you check into a hotel (or for an activity, etc) you are greeted with smiles and warmth. This isn’t always the case in all countries! But in Bali, you know you are in good hands.
I know sometimes when we travel, we tend to gravitate to other travelers to hang out with. But I encourage you to strike up conversations with the locals – there’s a lot you can learn from someone who comes from a different background than your own!
3. Trekking through rice terraces
I don’t know about you – but we don’t have rice terraces where I come from! So undoubtedly being surrounded by terraced rice fields was a trip highlight. And for those of us who spend most of our days in an office and on calls, getting out into nature is a much needed experience when we travel!
Tegallalang is the most famous of the rice terraces in Bali – but it’s jam packed. So if you have time, I recommend trying to see another rice terrace – such as Jatiluwih or taking a trip to east Bali around the Sideman area.
4. Temple hopping around the island
One thing Bali doesn’t have a shortage of are temples! And true to form, they are incredibly beautiful and unique. I recommend taking a tour guide with you on your temple visits so you can understand the history and significance behind the temples you visit.
I also suggest you choose a few ahead of time so you don’t feel ‘templed-out’ lol. This is a thing.
Some of my favorite temples are Ulun Danu (the Lake Beratan Lake temple that you’ve no doubt seen photos of!). It’s in Northern Bali. And in East Bali, Lempuyang Gate – or heaven’s gate – is incredibly beautiful and an iconic spot for photos. Although make sure to come early because lines for photos can get super crazy. Taman Ayun, Tirta Empul, Besakih, and Tirta Gangga are other great ones to explore.
5. Take a Balinese Cooking Class
Have I mentioned how much I LOVE the food in Bali? Well I do. In fact, everything from the actual Balinese cuisine to the trendy vegan/health food that has become synonymous with Bali is up my alley.
One of the best ways to experience culture is through your tastebuds, so definitely make sure to partake in a cooking class while visiting Bali. It’s a great way to interact with locals AND take home a new skill to share with your friends. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
6. Climbing Mount Batur at Sunrise
If you haven’t done a sunrise hike before, you’re missing out on a truly epic experience. I’m not going to lie, Mt Batur can be somewhat challenging – especially when it’s dark out. But that was all part of the adventure!
And having it be tough on the way up, makes it all the more exciting when you finally reach the top and are met with stunning views. I don’t know about you, but there’s something kind of special about knowing you’re awake before anyone else and being on top of the world already. It’s pretty empowering.
7. Taking a Day Trip to Nusa Penida
One of the most beautiful spots around Bali is definitely Nusa Penida. If you’ve seen any photos of Bali, you’re likely familiar with these iconic cliffsides and white sand beaches. Getting there isn’t too challenging –just depart the main island via Sanur, Serangan, or Padang Bai.
Some of the iconic spots to visit are Klingking Beach, Atuh Beach, Crystal Bay, snorkeling at Manta Point, Peguyangan Waterfall, and Diamond Beach.
8. Partying it up at Finn’s Beach Club
Did you even go to Bali if you didn’t hit up the famous Finn’s Beach Club!? It’s a bit of a mecca with 4 pools, 9 bars (including 2 swim up pool bars), 5 restaurants, sushi bar, daily DJs, and stunning sunsets. Families are welcome, but there is also an adults only infinity pool section.
They have a number of entry options – from being a day pass (less expensive) to table service (more expensive).
9. See some epic waterfalls
One thing Bali does not have a shortage on is beautiful waterfalls! Some of them are easy to access, while others are only for the more adventurous traveler. Ubud is a great area for visiting waterfalls, as well as northern Bali – like Munduk and Lovina. There you will have a better chance of finding secluded waterfalls – without crowds.
Tegenungan is one of the most popular waterfalls in Bali and it has the crowds to match! So go early if you want to enjoy it in peace. Tukad Cepung is one of the my favorite waterfalls and oh so photogenic!
10. Stay in a beautiful Balinese resort
If ever there was a place to splurge a little on a fantastic place to stay – it’s in Bali. And the best part is that the prices are not bad by western standards, so it can actually be quite affordable. There’s nothing like waking up with views of the jungle or rice terraces out your window. And make sure to treat yourself to a floating breakfast as well! You won’t want to miss having breakfast in the pool, would you?!
11. Explore the many trendy eateries
No matter whether you’re vegan, gluten free, or insert other trendy diet – Bali has you covered on the food front! It’s amazing food is definitely one of the reasons I love this island so much. And Canggu really takes the cake in terms of countless delicious, creative restaurants. Eat healthy – or indulge – it’s totally up to you.
12. Drinking bintangs on the beach with friends
And lastly, friends are one of the best parts of travel – both the kind you brought with you from home, and the ones you meet along the way. I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be than relaxing on a beach enjoying a drink with friends.
(And in case you aren’t familiar a bintang is the local Balinese beer!)
